Top Selling Cars in Europe: Peugeot 208, Sandero, and T-Roc Take the Podium

Peugeot 208 Claims Top Spot as Best-Selling Car in Europe, Dethroning Volkswagen Golf After 14 Years

The Peugeot 208 topped the European new car market in 2022, selling 206,816 units in 30 markets. The French small car saw a 5% increase in sales compared to the previous year, which allowed Peugeot to reclaim the top spot in the rankings, previously held by the 207 in 2007.

In 2022, the European new car market witnessed a major shift in its rankings, as the Peugeot 208 emerged as the best-selling model, dethroning the Volkswagen Golf, which had held the title since 2008. The 208’s success can be attributed to a 5% increase in its sales compared to the previous year, while the Golf saw a decline in sales due to issues with software, availability and increased competition within the Volkswagen Group. As a result, the Golf slipped to fifth place, behind the Dacia Sandero, Volkswagen T-Roc and Fiat/Abarth 500.
